Yalgorup National Park >> Bunbury I had a slightly restless night, though that could be attributed to the sudofed I had last night to help with the runny nose I've been fighting off from becoming a cold. It seems to be working, so perhaps it was just an allergy. Either way, apart from a very slight cough and occasionally a runny nose, I'm doing surprisingly well. I cooked myself up some breakfast, wheatbix, mixed in with some water and honey. Not going to try that again. Probably not even the wheatbix, I now remember why I never ate them as a kid. Bland breakfasts are not my thing. I'm thinking I might start cooking up pasta or rice for breakfast instead, unless I'm near a roadhouse which could serve me up some greasy sausage rolls or something! After packing up my gear and hitting the road again, I decided i'd try to make my first break a roadhouse about 21km south of where I was. After parking the bike out the front I grabbed myself one of those sausage rolls, along with a flavoured milk - better than Gatorade those things! (sadly, no electrolytes that I need... *cough*) Eating my food out the front of the roadhouse one of the other customers struck up a conversation, asking where I'm headed. He nearly choked when I said Brisbane... I can't blame him, I'm beginning to wonder about the sanity of it all! After declining my first offer for a lift into Bunbury I was back on the road. It was now about 9:30am, and I'd made some good progress, staying in my 'favoured' gear, which gives me about 21-22km/h comfortably. After about another 45 minutes I stopped off the side of the road for a quick drink of water, and checked how much I had still - roughly 3 bottles worth, or about 2.5L. It isn't going to be a long day today, and I'm not all that far from civilisation, so that should do me fine. If I was starting a day trekking across the desert, I'd be very worried if I only had 3L of water with me! Not long after I took off from a 5 minute break I noticed a few spots of rain coming down... Nothing to be worried about though, didn't look like it would last long. Or so I thought. Not much after that the rain started to get heavier, but far from afraid of the rain, I actually enjoy riding in it! Ok, it can get a bit cold at times, but apart from that, it's great! Not so great, however, was that despite the forecast of a fine day, it was raining. As i'd not expected this, my sleeping bag was sitting external to my drysak in the trailer. I also had some clothes sitting in a backpack on top of the trailer that I was less concerned about - that bag is reasonably water proof too(though not totally, as I found out later tonight!) Anyway, back on the road again after the rain settled, and I was making more good progress, keeping my speeds up above 19km/h for the most part. With any luck this is just good weight training for me so that when I do get around to reducing the amount of gear I have, my speeds and distances per day increase. Not far from Australind now though, as I took a right turn towards the coast, and my first sight of shoreline for the day. From here on in I pretty much cruised around the suburbia for another hour or so, heading towards Bunbury. I'd made pretty good time, and my estimates were spot on, so there was absolutely no hurry. It wouldn't be bad to get out of this weather though - after playing cat and mouse all day it had finally caught up with me and served me with a good downpour. I made my way across to the beach, where I could see a nice big storm cell breeding off the coast... Pity my GPS sent me to the exact opposite end of the beach to where I was supposed to be going. After a quick course correction, I made my way to the house of Russ, a welcome warm shower and clean clothes awaited! Stats for the day: Distance: 61.2km Average: 16.4km/h Maximum: 29.1km/h Don't be too fooled by that average speed though - I was hovering around a 18km/h average up until I hit Australind - but ending a day by leisurely cruising along the shoreline at 10km/h seemed to be the right thing to do :)
